PHPbb (noob question)
Alright, so I just started hosting my own web server (using Abyss Web Server), and got a DNS host and all that good stuff. Now, I want to install a PHPbb, and I have no idea where to start. I'm pretty experienced with computers and servers and stuff, but where does all this go and why did they fail to include any documentation?
Once I've extracted all the files to /phpbb, how do I access the message board? Or do I need to configure it first and if so how? Do I need to do anything to the CGI bin or SQL database (I've never worked with either of these before so if I do please tell me what exactly to do)?
Thanks in advance.

OK. It sounds like you have downloaded the board so the first step is to create a new MySQL database and give it a name, anything you like really just make a note of the details.
Then goto http://www.yourdomain.com/phpbb
Obviously change it to your location. You should get bounced to the install page. Fill out the information there and then once its configured delete the install and contrib directories.
You should then be able to log into the board.
The whole thing should take you no more than 5 minutes...

Hmm it works, it starts installing, but it says it could not connect to the database when I hit the "Install" button.
If my program says I created a database called appollyon_1 and the database host is freelinuxhost.com what would I fill in for Database Name and Database Username (two different things). I've tried switching them, but still get the same error.

What program are you using to manage the database?

ok it sounds like you have entered something wrong...
Check the following:
1 - Database server/hostname - Try entering here the actual IP address for the MySQL server you have supplied by your host
2 - Your database name: The actual name you gave the database when you created it
3 - Database Username/password: When you created the database you should have been prompted to give it a username and password. Enter those here..
As Abhi said though it really depends on how you created the database. Does your host allow you to do it through a control panel? If so you would have chosen a database user/pass...
I'd be happy to install if for you but I would need sensitive information about your host which you may, quite rightly, be unwilling to give out...

Nah, it's cool. I trust you. Plus, there isn't much of the site to screw up yet.
I'll PM the stuff to you.
