Other domains on a server

Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but since it relates to both domains and servers...Smiling

I've thought it would be handy to know what other domains are hosted on the same (NT) web server as mine is. That way if my site is down, I can quickly check my "neighbors" and see if it's just me or if it's the whole machine. (Kinda like looking around the neighborhood during a power outage to see who has lights!)

Is this possible? Whois, nslookup, tracert, there seem to be lots of network utilities out there -- does one do this?

If I am not mistaken most host chmod their clients root directory 701 or 711 to hide it from other clients residing on the same shared server. for example CIHOST and PAIR.COM servers are left open and if you go up 1 level you can view other clients and their files sharing the same server, but the file are mostly encrypt or locked by the admin.

Try asking your host for just some clients refs that is hosted with them and from there you can be able to know whether your host is down or somewhere there is a routing failure.

Good luck.

I found a roundabout way to do it. I tried typing in several IPs very close to mine, used a whois to verify that they are registered on the same DNS at the host, then used netcraft.com to find out which were running on NT boxes. Now it's possible (probable?) that my host has more than one NT web server, so these sites still may or may not be on my site's machine, but I'm getting closer! Smiling

Why not just ask your hosts for other sites listed on the server instead of trying to figure this all out yourself? Smiling

Well, actually finding the other sites is secondary Wink. My major goal in this exercise is to learn more about how the 'net works, what tools are available and how they work.

P.S. I got a response today from the webmaster at the other site I found, and yes, we're on the same server. Feel like I just met my next-door neighbor!
