openSRS(Opened Shared Registration System) is a program whereby ICANN accredited Tucows.com offers anyone with the ability to operate a DNS server to buy, register, and sell domain names at wholesale prices. All that is required is that one registers at least 25 names in 1 year.

At first glance, this sounds like a good idea; however, it also sounds too good to be true.

I'd like to get comments on this. What are the pitfalls? What happens to a registered name if the affilate registrar goes out of business? I can't put my finger on it but I don't know if I can feel secure about the whole matter. What does everyone else think?

Nothing. I use them and they are excellent. They are very good for people who want to resell domains (like www.onestop.net) as well as people who just register alot (25+). Their software is excellent, except for a few features that need to be updated.

Overall I think they are very good.

Oh yeah, to answer your question: your domain names will still be registered, you just won't be able to use OpenSRS anymore. Another way of saying it is: OPenSRS's actions are etched in stone, which means they can never be deleted or changed.
