Newbie Question
Hi,
I just got my own domain name. I want to host it on my home computer. What would I need to do that. I just want to host it for my own learning purpose, not commercial.
I have a P-166 with Linux and Apache. I guess I need a mail server.... and an IP address.
Can someone point me to some companies that would provide me with an IP address.
Thanks
Rajesh

You can always use your static IP address to access a server on your PC. But if you want a domain you’ll need an IP and a name server.
Contact your ISP. They’ll need to assign you a dedicated (non static IP) number. Some ISP’s will do this free of charge, well others will charge you extra or can not/will not do it at all. You may want to consider getting DSL. You’ll get faster speeds and most DSL providers don’t have a problem supplying a dedicated IP.

Then once you get a dedicated IP, you can use IP Masking so you can have an actual web address, not just a bunch of numbers
Check out the follwoing URL for a complete list: http://www.redirectionguide.net/rg/cgi-bin/search.pl?type=IP+Masking
UPDATE: www.dhs.org has a service so you don't have to have a dedicated IP...
