New domain names - TLDs
What are everyones thoughts on the new TLDs that are undergoing examination by ICANN? I think probably something like three new extensions would be good, but if they approve something like ten or more it'll just be stupid. That's just my opinion thought.
More info can be found at the following URL: http://www.icann.org/tlds/
And what about these companies taking pre-registrations for these new TLDs? Have you reserved any yet? Spent $$$ on a domain that you don't even know you'll get for sure? I'll admit that I used Whoix to pre-register some .web domain names. I figure there's nothing to lose since they only charge you if they get you your domain(s). But others like WebTLD charge $35. What are your thoughts?

It has it's good points and bad points. Good - it will free up new domains for new companies and you will be able to know about the site more from it's domain extension (.news, .sex, etc.). Bad - Creates new confusion for Internet newbies.

Would you pay me $35 now for a dinner for two, for a restaurant that I'm thinking of opening? Keep in mind, I might not open it. Sounds like a deal eh?

Im personally not crazy about new extensions. Dot Com is king. Thats not changing. Billions of dollars have been spent by companies branding their .com. Is someone like yahoo gonna announce "we are now known as yahoo.web" lol.
It also opens the door for tons of trademark violations. People will run out and register things like nike.shop
The other main problem is where in the past .com .net. org were created for funtunality of the internet these new ones are just entrprunerial ventures looking to get rich and trying to persuade consumers into why they should register their domains. If i see one more .tv banner I think Im gonna scream.
Maybe try and register some really good ones at the various registrars just incase they take off.

Being in the domain name business myself, I think the people that offer that are a joke. And there is no promise that they will be able to get you that domain name when it comes out. In fact there is no promise that those domain names will be available in the same manor that the currnet .net .com and .org are. For example there might be requirements for getting .web domains that aren't known now because those requirements haven't been established.

I was going to wait and tell you that you had to be female to eat there once it opened. Didn't I mention that?

One thing is for sure: once these new TLDs come out there will be a major scramble for all the top notch names (IE: business.web etc...).

There are many sites that have a queue which will attempt to add your domain when the new TLD's become available.
The whole domain registration system could crash with the vast numbers of queues and individuals scrambling to get the high ground! (OK, maybe not crash but grind to almost a halt temporarily).

That's very true Jaiem. It also brings up the issue of WebTLD and employees. They've been cited as having only four employees, which many feel isn't enough to administrate the .web TLD. I guess it's another issue ICANN needs to ponder...
