Net or Org?

Your opinion please......

Should I choose ".net" or ".org" if ".com" is already taken? I know ".net" is much more popular than ".org", but I myself find ".org" more distinctive. I often can't remember the ".net" sites, but I always remember the ones with an "org" extension.

What do you think?

In my personal opinion I’d say .org is very specific to an organization. I normally associate it with a nonprofit or similar “community oriented” site rather then a business. .net and .com have much more flexibility. However technically you can use any of the three for what ever you want.

My professional opinion is “get both!”...

Yeah, I'd definitely get both, since domains are as cheap as $11/year. The COM would be the best, but if the domain is really good then get the NET/ORG. If it's just a so-so domain, then keep searching to see if you can't find something similar in the COM version...

I see .com's as being the "1-800"'s of the internet. When toll free calling first came about, every got a 1-800 number. Soon, they ran out of 1-800 numbers, and they had to start with 1-888, etc. However, what's the first number you think of when you hear "toll free"? 1-800....

I say, unless you can register your name with the top three domain levels,....com, .net, and .org,...don't use that name. You want to be able to just say your name without the extension. If your company is only using a .net, or .org, you always have to emphasize that it's a .net company, not a .org, and that will be a pain.

Always try to get the .com. If that is not available try a different one. .com is universal, everyone knows it and immediately types it in when looking for a company.

Only get a domain if all 3 are available!
