Need advice with dedicated hosting

Hi guys and girls, hopefully you dont mind if I pick your brains a little? Smiling

I'm looking to ditch my semi dedicated hosting package and make the leap to a fully dedicated server. My experience of hosting has led me to believe strongly that you do indeed get what you pay for! My current host leaves a lot to be desired for the £52pcm that I pay currently.

I've got my eye on a few deals at the moment and see myself paying a reasonable £80 a month for the following rough spec of a dedicated server:

Dual Core P4 2ghz
1GB Ram
80Gb HD

However, what I'm wondering is if it is possible to build a server myself (could easily do that for £400) and have it managed in a data centre? I am assuming that this would be cheaper per month and that it is indeed a service that is available?

I have tried googling, but haven't turned up much - thanks to most hosting companies abusing their meta tags.

If anyone has any advice or suggestions for me I would be mighty happy. Laughing out loud

I'm tempted to do this as well, have you tried contacting a data centre directly? These guys for example: http://www.telecityredbus.com/ there's another popular one in London, but I've forgotten the name of it.

Do the data centres not demand you use a certain minimum number of machines? I'd be interested in hearing how you get on with this, keep us informed. Wink

Is physical access to the server a primary requirement for you? If not, you could possibly go with one of the major data centers in the U.S. You could certainly win on the cost with the UKP/USD conversion ratio in your favor.

I would also suggest that you review the information security policies of the providers under consideration. This is particularly important if you are required to be in compliance with ISO or British Standards.

If you're going to use your own equipment that's usually considered colocation and you'd be responsible for managing it. You'd probably be able to find some places that would be flexable, though.

You are talking here aboout colocation Vs Dedicated. There are pros and cons. I prefer dedicated servers. I have severals of them. You do not have the headache of mentaining bandwith as you will have more than enough for each server. You do not have to worry about server basic security as it will be provided. Also, the provide basic support. If you are not familiar with server administraion, then dedicated is the best way to go. It is even cheaper these days. In the US, you can get a dedicated server for as cheap as $90 with lots of specs.

I assume the OP has got some server administration skills as he's going to build a server himself, but I'd like to ask what's more profitable in terms of finance: building a server and then colloing it or buying dedicated one?
