hey, i was thinking about running my own server, and i checked out corflakes's post. i have a DSL connection, which is fairly fast. I was wondering what all i would need to start. I dont really have enough money to buy an independent server, so i would probably have to run it off a network. what would i need? any idea of how much it could cost? thanks

A router/firewall
Operating system
Plenty of RAM
Knowledge

If you are going to buy a new computer to use as a server, with a router, it would cost about $1200
Thats what it cost for my server, with these specs:
1 GHZ AMD Thunderbird Processor
MSI Mainboard
30 GB HD
578 MB RAM
52X-CDrom Drive
Floppy Drive

Also, I use RedHat7.2 and it works fine.
do you know anything about managing servers?

nope...next to nothing...
i'm thinking about getting a used computer...i know it doesnt have 1gHZ though, what is the lowest i can go?
and hard drive space...if my site isnt monstrous, i can just have a 15GB one, and then add if need be, correct?
motherboard...does it matter?
what is floppy and CD drive for?

Processor speed depends on what you are using it for. Do you have high traffic? a lot of scripts?
15GB is big for a site, I have 30 GB because I host others as well as myself
Floppy/CD Drive are for loading an OS and other non-downloadable programs
what OS are you planning on running?/
Any experience with Linux?

A router would network your computers
I have a Linksys 4 port Cable/DSL router with 5 computers on it (I switch 2 laptops)

Well, there are a couple of bunch of good sources on the net. One is Cablemodeminfo. It shows how to set up a cable connection in Linux. DSL should be quite similar. LinuxNewbie.org has some good instructions.
