I see a whole bunch of posts about starting your own hosting site
go to http://www.excelland.com
they'll provide you with a free hosting service for your visitors, you have 3 options
1. use an account on excelland and provide hosting from there.
2. purchase a domain with excelland and use it to provide free subdomain hosting.
3. if you already have a domain, type it when asked and you'll be able to provide hosting from your domain.
its 100% free, for you and for your visitors. no banners will be placed on your visitors' sites(unless you want too), only on yours.

Hmmm.....Overall it's a good offer and you don't have to own or rent a server and the hassle of maintaining it to provide sub-domain hosting.

However I read their faqs and I found one basic requirement that they cannot provide CGI/Perl:

Quote:
Do you allow CGI / Perl / PHP3?

Currently, No.

So how is anyone able to use formmail and other basic scripts without this features which is a neccessity for even a small site? OR maybe call the scripts from another site with Cgi-bin/Perl? Any suggestions?

While this service is nice, it really wont take you very far. As the frontpage states, you only make up to 50% of advertising revenue. ANotherwords, you get halkf the ads, you dont get to pick all the ads, you dont get to control the entire look (that means they could easily run their own link all over the place) and the list goes on.

This company isnt the first to try this, everyone.net does the same thing, 2 years later and it's their least popular feature.

After working with many, many, many free hosts it is VERY apparent just how hard it is to make money doing so. Take out the costs and you'll make a bit more, but when you cant control the features past a certain point, in short it's a cool feature but hardly a big money maker.

http://northsky.com offers this and is reported to be better than excelland. Wigloo is another but not recommended. All of this is based on user reports, I don't use any of these services personally, but also mod. a FWS board which users dicuss these types of programs.

Hmm, with this feature and all the other free style things (domains, emails and such) you could make yourself quite the portal... : )
