Hosting my own site

Greetings...

I have decided to host my own web site after years of letting IPs do it. I have a dedicated T1 line now so I don't see why I shouldn't do it myself.

Question. I have only a basic idea of how to do it. Is there some source on the internet (or otherwise) that can give me the basics of setting it up? What do I need to know about firewalls and permissions? What are the pros and cons of using my own home computer vs. a stand alone server.

It's all basic beginning stuff for me.

thanks...

Cornflake, welcome to WMF. Some things to consider. One is that you should have the site on a stand-alone server, with a UPS, with a Firewall, not on the same network as your other machines. Several other things to consider are what OS that you will be running. You have a couple of choices, Linux/BSD or Windows. I prefer Linux but it depends upon what you are confortable with.

So depending upon what OS you are planning to run, I can point you at some tutorial sites.

This site offers people with dynamic IPs to host their own site, however, I think they have good information on their support and FAQs on setting up.

I agree with Mairving on some points, but it all depends on what your site is.
Do you have a computer available to host a low-traffic site? What are its specs?
If it is high-traffic, I'd say get a standalone server, running Linux/BSD, not connected to your regular network.
If it is low traffic, use a home computer with plenty of RAM, and run Linux on the same network... I ran a low traffic site on a 100 mhz, 16 mb RAM machine for a few months, until I ran into the need for another workstation, so I upgraded to a 1 ghz, 512 MB RAM machine with RedHat 7.2 and I run VMWare to have windows run with Excel, Word, etc.

It all depends on what you need and what you are doing.
