I know many of you webjedi have been asking many questions about this free domain name site. So it is only logical that there should be thread dedicated to this.

Im brand spanking new at this web master stuff. But im real dam dedicated and am learning all aspects of this at a real fast rate. I must say the web master forums has been really useful. Yet I am still lost to many simple things.

I regestered a domain name with DomainZero.com for free. All they ask is permission to email you a bunch of stuff. Now im praying to God that there is no sick catch that I don't know about. But i read all the help and faqs and most of my questions have been answered there. They even speak on topics that im still confused about. I read it over and over again and I still cant get it!

I know some of you are checking domainzero right now, so its you guys that I hope will help me. Lets say for example you have some cheezy practice site with the url

http://slabtzulinks.terrashare.com

and your domain name is

http://www.SlabTzu.com

What is it that you have to write in the "THIRD LEVEL DOMAIN INFORMATION", "EMAIL FOWARDING INFORMATION", and "NAME SERVERS" to have the domain name point to the url and what ever else?
They tell you in the FAQ;

** How do I point my new domain name to my current web site?
Go to to http://access.domainzero.com and use your domain name and DomainZero.com password to log in.
In the "Third Level Domain Information" section ensure at a minimum the following information is provided in the listed fields:
Line Item 1.: "Host name should read "@"
"Record Type" select 'URL Frame'
"MX Pref" not used (may read 10)
"Address" Must read the Full URL address where the domain name is expected to point.

Example: (http://www.myprovider.com/~mysite)
Completing these fields will point your new domain name to your existing web site.
Detailed information is provided after logging into your domain administration account.
Also see the "Technical Questions" section below.

Ok thats cool but I still dont get it. I even read the technical questions and uuhhh I still dont get it. So if some one is so kind enough to spoon feed me the information of what I have to do I'll give you the webmaster award of the century. So who ever has done this already with Domainzero please put me on.

I know its something real silly right under my nose like, swinging on a nose hair yelling "Democracy cant exist without an education!!!". "But most Americans cant afford an education" replies the other nose hair swinger in the other nostril. The nose hair says "Nothing in this world is free!" and "This aint no free ride either, your democracy was bought even before you knew the constitution was signed so plumeth to your death you want everything for free nose hair swingers!!!" The neighboring nose hair felt the urge to slap any nose hair swingers for believing that democracy was free. All this right under our noses, I told you it would be silly.

The easiest and most logical thing to do would be to contact your host telling them you now own such and such a domain, and that you want to you that instead of your current sub-domain. All pay hosts allow you to host a domain, and some free ones do also. In your case, I think you need to contact Terra Share and see what they can do for you...

I just got my DomainZero set up this week. It redirects users from my newly registered domain name (www.cancerdrugfeedback.net) to the free hosting account I have at Brinkster. In the "Third Level Domain Information" section, I have the following three entries:

Host Name: mail
Record Type: MXE (Mail Easy)
MX Pref: 10
Address: 209.19.56.20
[these are all defaults: this entire record was left as it was]

Host Name: @ [for people who type the URL without the www prefix]
Record Type: URL Redirect
MX Pref: 10 [didn't touch]
Address: http://www14.brinkster.com/klwong/

Host Name: www
Record Type: URL Redirect
MX Pref: 10 [didn't touch]
Address: http://www14.brinkster.com/klwong/

Under "Email Forwarding Information" you can specify mailboxes to which your domain's email will be forwarded. So I set it up so that mail sent to [email protected] will now end up in the mailbox that I specified in the "Forward To" box.

The only problem I see with this whole system so far, is that people will type "cancerdrugfeedback.net" into their browser and suddenly find themselves at my brinkster.com URL. So I just put a notice on the top of my opening page explaining this, so they'll know they're really in the right place.

Hope this helps. BTW, I have gotten none of those ads they say that are "paying" for our registration, but it's pretty early to tell...

I experienced the same thing users typed www.ian-world.com and ended up at a really long and scary URL
http://www.worldzone.net/society/ianrules/index.html
it just takes a while for the cloaking to be set up after a week or so you wont be able to tell that its forwarding the address bar will always say www.yourname.com
just telling you
PS: how come now when i go to domainzero to register another domain it says that you have to purchase a domain first(or something like that)
did the offer end? i hope not i badly need another domain for my new webhosting service. I dont have enough cash to buy a domain and pay for the service

hehe

Offer ended from what I've read. Your new hosting service is ian-world heh. Remember that in theory, you'd only get one anyhow (yes, I know...)

Okay I will try to explain as simple as I can.

1)Domain registration can only be registered through Domain Registrars such as Icann or its dealers and Network Solution.

2)Domain name registration:
To register a domain, Internic the governing body needs at least DNS(2 nameservers) for automatic detection of your domain, that is a primary and secondary servers which when converted to numerical numbers for example will be 209.56.210.134 and 209.56.210.144 which we call IP address. In your case it could be Domainzero's servers and most probably since it's free they may have more control over ownership and you don't need to change anything but to confirm do a "Whois" check and it should provide you with more details.

2)Third level domains is similar to sub-domains where the host terrashare.com is the root directory and slabtzulinks is in a folder one level below the root directory.

3)Domain redirect.
Your DNS(domain nameservers) must be the host that will redirect or configure the settings at their end so that it will point your domain to say for example http://www.slabtzulinls.terrashare.com which is your free space at Terrashare.com

4)Cloaking means that at the address bar of browser for users it shows slabtzulinks.com instead of terrashare.com/slabtzulinks/index.html if you are using redirect service. However you need to design your website pages using FRAMES to still maintain the stabtzulinks.com at address bar of browser or it will change to another url when user click to some internal links of your site.

5)Email forwarding is very straight forward and it only requires you to login to your host's control panel, normally you need a username and password to enter CP to make the mail re-direct changes.

6)When everthing is all in order, you need to wait 24-48 hours due to propogation and migration of server settings before your domain is detected automatically.

I hope the above is of help.

Regards.
