Trouble with graphics
Can anyone tell me why sometimes when I open a graphic in paint, and then I try to select a portion of it and paste it to another open window of paint, it pastes in a completely different colour? Does this have to do with the version of the graphic (say gif or jpg or bmp). Also why when I save one kind of graphic to another type, why does it distort the colours? Is this something that happens only in Windows Paint? Maybe I should be using a different software altogether, but I am such a creature of habit, I just hate to change. I guess that makes me sort of like my husband who wants to make all the insurance claims by hand instead of submitting them online.

making a .jpeg picture into a .gif can make it change color sometimes

It's all about numbers.
A .gif for example has only 256 (or less) colours in it, where as a .jpg (jpeg) has 16 million (give or take), and a .bmp has even more.
If the images are being distorted my guess would be you have the colour option (and or compression) set to low (save .jpg at about 72dpi :- dpi = dots per inch).
Paint isn't the best program out there, if you are just modifying images something like ifranview (is freeware) might be better for you, if your making images etc then paint shop pro, or photo shop etc might be better.

Oooof! No Window's paint is not an image editor.
If you can't or don't want to invest in Photoshop the image editors below sell for under 100.00:
(These also offer free trials of the programs)
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Ulead PhotoImpact
Corel Paint Shop Pro
If you can't do that, then give the free GIMP a try.
