Tracking clicks on site
We are looking for a way to track click throughs from our site to our clients sites so that we can monitor clicks at a glance rather than having to look at the stats for each individual site and check the referrer info, etc. We were using a service from linkcounter.com but they seems to have just stopped the service (it was free!) so I've had to spend this morning changing the links back to direct to the clients sites rather than the diverted ones via their tracking system!!
We then thought about creating a page on our site for each client and have the links divert to that page then redirect to the clients own url but we are worried that it will put visitors off as a refresh in the head will work once the page loads and although there isn't much on the page the tracking system in place for logging that page is there and so visitors may be sat with that page for a wee while, or if we use a javascript redirect which would be quicker for the visitor it may get the site in trouble with the search engines who are picking up on that kind of thing as spam!
We would prefer a solution that doesn't involve a third party as their server downtime affects the click throughs working and can, as we've found out now, just close down for good!
Any thoughts gratefully received

I posted a similar question quite a ways back but never really got an answer. I'll watch this thread to see if you have better luck!

The company I work for built its own click-tracking system for a cd-rom application containing lots of html. Ofcourse, the user has to get online before the data is sent.
Although I cannot distribute that code, I can tell you that making such a system is (what they told me) a typical cgi thing. Also it seems (what they told me too) that implementing such a system is a real pain in the ... ehm... head.

Its a piece of cake with ColdFusion and a database.
I use the same system on my site to track clickthrus to resources. Its a very simple bit of coding and is ultra fast so your clients won't be looking at a blank screen for too long
In fact, if you ask me nicely, I'll code it for you!!!

I don't use a database for this site though
