Notepad doesn't save spacing.

http://www.editpad.net/editpadclassic.html would be a better program for you to use (or any actual text editor).

notepad does save spacing becuase i've used it for 3 years to make my website and i've never had a problem. i dont know why you're notepad program has gone crazy. but that wouldn't be something that we could figure out since we have no way of taking a look at your computer.

Still no real idea why this sudden change...i will do a defrag/clean up and see if i can get it back. I agreee that i have never had this problem before and Notepad always saves my spacing..
i am using a text editor callled Notetab Lite till i can get my pad back!!

thanks

Suzanne, i think you think i mean spacing within the html doc itself...
i don't..
i am referrring to the spacing only on and in notepad itself...i like to spread my code out a bit it makes it easier to read for a newbie like me Smiling

thanks

Yes, that's what I meant!

If the defrag doesn't help, you may want to investigate what you have recently installed. Some new programs use old .dlls and they may affect OS connected programs like Notepad.

For the record, though, I still think it sucks. NoteTab Lite is nice, but it's no EditPad. EditPad has features like being able to open many files *in the same window* that are tabbed like in Excel or similar programs. This means you don't have multiple windows open, and you can affect changes on all the documents that are open at once (the search and replace can work on just the document or all open documents).

There are more, but really, it's worth checking out.

Try copying the the file notepad.exe from another machine (one that works Wink). If that doesn't work and your desperate, you *could* try re-installing windows 'over-top'. But I'm not saying you should jump right to there.

While on the topic of editors. I still haven't found anything that beats the power of InterDev. However, it does have a hefty price and is a pretty large program to run for fast and simple editing. In InterDev, you can find/replace the "Current Document", "All Open Documents", "All Files in Project Folder (*.*)", or "Text Files (*.txt)" [that's with a text file currently open].

EditPad itself is now $20US.

I use the Classic. I have Lite installed, but I like the Classic best. I have been using it for, um, 3 years?

It is called "notepad.exe" on my computer, as it replaced notepad altogether. It has crashed once. I use it daily on 3 different computers.

Hi,

cuteHTML by GlobalScape -- line numbers, search/replace, browser selection, html tag popups, etc, etc. It's no interDev, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper -- $0

lol... I don't think anything cost more than InterDev. Is there?
I can't imagine what else it could do... write the pages for you? maybe take verbal dictation, that would be kuel.

Dragonsjaw,
just for the record:
Does this happen only when you click the 'Edit' button
or when you right-click & select 'View Source' too? (IE)

Also:
Does this only happen to pages viewed on-line
or pages viewed from your HD too?

For the record,
it started with no warning,
when the page was originally opened the code looked ok, if i made a change and then -saved- from the edit menu , then looked at page in browser, then brought notepad back up..the code was scrunched. If i didn't -save- it didn't happen.
I started using Notetablt as it was already on my machine and i didn't have time to learn/go get another test editor.
Notepad has since worked ok at times and then as soon as i get used to using it again, it reverts back to squashed code.
Happens to stuff on hard drive as i never do a save on view source from online.

I've come across the same problem as you describe and
can't really pin down what the problem is either.
It is exactly as you describe - what I have done is
ensure that wordwrap isn't set as an option. Check the
font that is set. Check if you downloaded the file to edit
correctly.
