Doesn't drag for me....I'm on a cable.

You might want to look at the weight of all of these images, and also the weight of the code....that's one thing about writing good code and using CSS....it makes the site lighter and faster loading.

The animated thingy is 67 KB
lady.jpg is a whopping 102KB

You are not optimizing your image very well...such heavy images and code will weigh a site down and can cause issues like what you describe on slow connections and slower machines....It sucks up CPU power to display bloated pages.

No...width and height and simply the image dimentions.

It's all in how you save the file from the image editor that affects the file size (weight of the image).

What image editor are you using? Photoshop? Paint Shop Pro? Other?

I took lady.jpg into Photoshop and saved for web at 50% at the exact same height and width and the file is 31KB.

Resizing using HTML is a bad idea, to do this you should use an image editor, as Roo suggested.

I suspect the biggest problem you have is because of that complicated image you have in the background. Try removing that and scrolling the site, that should speed things up. Smiling

*** EDIT ***
Am not seeing that problem myself: Firefox 2 beta -- Ubuntu Linux (no Opera fans, I haven't ditched it, I just dislike looking at sites of dubious virtue on my main browser. Wink )

Although my CPU is jumping to about 95% whenever I scroll. That large animated banner isn't helping either.

a Padded Cell our articles site!

That sounds like piracy to me. I PAY for my software, and have LEGAL versions.
