Someone steered me in this direction. I know NOTHING about it. Please help me.

Does the file need to be named ".htaccess", "htaccess.txt", or do I give it a name and have the htaccess as the file type?

Also, the same question goes for the htpasswd file.

Here is what I have so far...

htaccess file,

AuthUserFile /usr/test/test.htpasswd

AuthName "Cory's test"
AuthType Basic
<Limit GET POST>
require valid-user
</Limit>

htpasswd file,
cory:9.TMvchNj.LGc

One last question I have, can I test this on my local computer before I upload it to my server?

There's an excellent link at my search engine (signature link below), just search for it and it tells you lots of useful tips about .htaccess.

Hope it helps

When the save box comes up, type the filename with quotes around it. It should allow you to save it with that name then:

Where it says "Save As", type this:

".htaccess"

It should do the trick for you. Smiling

...or just change the name in your FTP program eg: WS_FTP. That's what I do.

I uploaded the .htaccess file and the .htpasswd file and now I can't view them on the server through my ftp program, I can't delete them, and they don't even work! What can I do?!

Yikes!

In this case, I would suggest contacting your web host. They can probably help you find the problem, and help you fix what isn't working. Smiling
