Java detection in browsers

Greetings -

Does anyone know a reliable way to detect in a browser if it has Java (not javascript) enabled?

I need to know, because I need to redirect to a different page, if Java isn't present on a page.

I'm tearing my hair out on this one -- anyone have any ideas?
