IE check needed (active X errors)
I just went downstairs to check something on my site in the internet cafe and IE was popping up with some Active X errors. I haven't been able to replicate this on my computer here, so I'm wondering if you all c ould help me out and check these two pages:
http://www.housing.uwaterloo.ca/residences/index.html
http://www.housing.uwaterloo.ca/residences/index_test.html
The second one does not include some javascript code that might be causing the problem. That's the only thing I can think of - everything else is plain vanilla HTML and CSS. And it's happening across the whole site so it's something in the template.
By the way, do those boxes line up along the bottom for you?
Thanks for the help.
(P.S. I can't stand that stupid "information bar"! I can't belive people put up with that. It's got incredibly bizarre, annoying, unuasble behaviour.)

Can you remember any details about the error, or check again?
I agree, it is probably a bad reaction to the AWStats Javascript. That checks a bunch of plugins like Java and Shockwave, and also tests for IE by writing out a snippet of VBScript. Sounds like an overzealous security program or something became alarmed by it -- the kind you're apt to find at a net cafe.
If that's the case, it doesn't sound like anything to be too concerned about, as I wouldn't expect most IE configurations to be like that. Unless you have a regular audience among internet cafe users, that is.
Sorry if that wasn't helpful -- I don't have IE at hand so can't check it myself.

The external link icons? Those don't work in IE 6 (doesn't understand attribute selectors). They do in 7. Which background colour do you mean ? page background colour??? Better fix that...

Joseff - thanks, that's what I'm looking for. It's trying to download an active X control in some installations of IE (6 and 7) - must depend on the security settings. I might try to go through that javascript.

I still haven't been able to replicate those errors - even on a different machine in the internet cafe.
Could someone check something else for me? I've got a bit of code that gets min and max-width to work in IE 6. This seems to break when security is set to "high". I've only been able to test this on the local network so could someone verify this for me? Set your security level to high in IE 6 and check this site:
http://www.housing.uwaterloo.ca
Does the width expand all the way to fill the screen or does it stop around 1000 pixels? That's what it's supposed to do. Do you see a difference when you change security settings?
Thanks

I use ie 7 (sorry)
Page expands to max in ie7 medium and high security.
Firefox 1.5x the top picture displays correct but if I bring window in so scrollers appear at bottom it displays pic to window length, then I scroll and see white space. Wierd -- maybe your script goes off the window's width.

Okay, it should definitely not expand wider than 1000 px in IE 7 or Firefox. IE 7 is being finnicky on me today so I can't check that right now.
The script should only apply in IE 6. Otherwise it's handled by CSS (min-width and max-width not supported by IE 6). That's weird behaviour in Firefox - it's not doing that for me at all.
What screen resolution are you on? It should always fill the width at 1024 or smaller. The min-width is set so that it will not go narrower than 760px.

it did not try to download any controls for me with IE7 and security settings on high. The page also expands to max for me. Screen res is 1024 x 768
