Homesite or Dreamweaver - Opinions?
Presently I'm using FP98 for my website. It's worked well up to now but there are some significant limitations that now I have to go beyond Mr. Bill's product.
I do like some of the features of FP such as the WYSIWYG (more or less) screen designer, right-click to edit object attributues, easy to add/edit tables and forms, very easy to control the code base etc. But I also have to sometimes get deep into the HTML and JavaScript code. And I would like to clean up some of the HTML and script code FP creates.
I'm trying to decide which of these two packages to use going forward for my website. Dreamweaver seems to be more WYSIWYG oriented which I think will help speed up my development while Homesite seems more a text editor. However Homesite 4.5 is about $90 while Dreamweaver is around $270.
Any opinions?
Thanks.

Dreamweaver, hands down! If your budget will allow it, well worth it.

Macromedia DreamWeaver is one of the best if not the best graphical HTML layout program I’ve used. Home Site is also very useful, as you said more of a code-oriented program. DreamWeaver used to include Home Site, I’m not sure if it still does.
Also take a look at http://www.evrsoft.com/ 1St Page 2000 is totally free and works much like Home Site. It also has support for tons of scripts and even includes CGI, VB, JS, and DHTML scripts.
Good luck,

I gotta stand up for us notepad users. Homesite all the way. Been using it for 3 years now and wouldn't change even if it was owned by Microsoft...well that would take some debate. No wysiwyg just, just plain code.
Someone had to say something...these wysiwygs are making it so the senseless can make a webpage...they are stealing business from the people who spent the time to learn how to properly build a website. Sorry guys, I got strong feelings on this subject.
Peace.

Vulken - I feel your pain.
Seriously, I know the problems of a code generator. Anytime you give up control to a code generator you're relying on someone else's skills to code your modules.
NTL, many web sites (such as mine) aren't that sophisitcated (yet!) and as such it's more effecient for my time to be able to add a table/image/fonts/etc. with a few clicks. Dreamweaver also lets you get to the html code so you can revamp it any way you want (FP does some funky editing for you that you can't control).
So long as I can still edit the HTML and the program keeps the same structure as I have typed I'm happy.
Thanks to everyone for thier input. I think I'll go with Dreamweaver but wait until version 3.0 is shipped. BTW, 3.0 does not come bundled with Homesite the way 2.0 did (I called them yesterday and asked).

I'll side with Vulken. HTML is pretty simple and everyone should learn how to use it, even those that wimp-out and use WYSIWYG toys. I've been a HomeSite user ever since version 2.5. It's the best text-based editor on the market. At least, it was. Lately I've been testing 40tude HTML, which is a re-write of the excellent 1-4-all editor. It's still in the development stages, but it's got me seriously considering dumping my beloved HomeSite. It's superior to HomeSite in many ways. Anyone else try it?

I use Dreamweaver (macromedia), Homesite(allaire)and Visual Interdev (microsoft) in combination with eachother.
I must say that dreamweaver gets annoying after a while, because:
-for simple effects it generates scripts that are way too complex/big. That makes the site slower to download.
-It's not really Wysiwyg in combination with IE, I would rather say it's Wysinwyg (n=not!).
Homesite is very ok, because of the possibility to switch easily between HTML-code and design (wysiwig), but I'm waiting for release 4.5(expected March 2000).
Interdev is a very large program and it is very, very ok. Because it's so big it could become confusing if you're new on HTML.
I think the best way to create a site is to use more than one HTML-editors (incl. notepad) combined, because they all have their + & -'s.

I use Dreamweaver when I am on a tight deadline and for doing template mockups. Otherwise I use notepad/homesite whatever is at hand.

Thanks for the opinions.
I checked out 1st Page2000 as Adam suggested above. It looks like a very close clone of Homesite.
I think ultimately I'll end up with Dreamweaver but will wait until vesion 3 is out.

Is there a demo download of Interdev available? I have searched the Microsoft site but can't find anything.

I've never seen a demo of Interdev.
But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

i use interdev and it doesn't asdd <tbody>
maybe you have a old version.
if you are really into building and programming -
you shold even try to buy it.
it is just great!!!
it creates subs and names end a lot of useful things.
for example -
for each object in the document (image, input..etc)
you have a menu - which you can add an eent and a function on only one click!
it just great!!!
if you want i can send you some pics of the program - with the events and the gui...
bye bye.

You can do that with Dreamweaver, too.
Hand coding might be the cleaner way, but if you ever have 10 deadlines for million dollar websites, you will see that its simply unpossible to do that with hand coding.
I love Dreamweaver, there is no other WYSIWYG tool which gives you so much control over your code. All the other editors often delete changes you make to the code, DW doesnt. A problem with Version 2.0, to is that absolute placement is off a few pixels, I hope thats fixed in DW 3.
Later,
Malte

I use 1st Page 2000, and usually find that to be my favorite. Althought it is text based, it speeds up the process by having the ability for one click insertion of a tag or something. If I'm just changing a spelling error or something then I'll use notepad.

Justin - I go 1st page and it's OK. Wish it had a WYSISYG function, even an elementary one.
How's Homesite's WYSISYG? I'm sure it can't compare to Dreamweaver but how does it compare to say FP?
Thanks.

Yep, so do I. I always use Dreamweaver for basic templates (either that or Freehand) - I then do most of the other stuff in Homesite or whatever...

I think Homesite's WYSYWIG is better than DW.
When working with <div> in DW, u'll see your <div>'s will not be placed on the spot you put them (it's a difference of some pixels).
That annoys me.

Homesites WYSIWYG is not all that IMO - I never use anyway.
