Perhaps you should a book on flash. All of what yoy want to do will be in the first few chapters and you can keep reading to learn more advanced techniques.

Also, if you use a WYSIWYG editor (no comments from the peanut gallery), there are sometimes plug-ins that will let you "automatically" generate flash galleries similar to that one.
While that's not always the ideal solution, sometimes the time saved is worth it. I've used a Dreamweaver plugin on one site I run. Here's the URL of one of the galleries:

Of course, it offers a lot of options, including size colors, etc.

You shouldn't have to use Flash to do this. You could do this with javascript just as easily. It's just a double mouseover - look for scripts that will do that.

Im not plugging them but if you will be looking for scripts instead, go to dynamicdrive.com and javascriptkit for scripting...

Here's a neat little Flash thing. It's great when you're too lazy to deal with Flash/Swish/Scripts/whatever...
It uses XML to control things. One issue I have with it though is that since updating to Flash Player 8, I can't get it to work.
Simple Viewer. Check out the Postcard Viewer too.
Another neat little utilitty that uses just one php file to run things is PHP Photo Galley Script
