Favicons
Does anyone here know anything about favicons?! I tried to create a favicon.ico file for http://www.aardvarktravel.net - it works, but for some reason when I saved the file, the main colour turned from orange to yellow. You can see for yourself by going to http://www.aardvarktravel.net , clicking on 'Bookmark AardvarkTravel.net' and then seeing the link from within your favorites...
Can anyone help and tell me what's going on?!
Thanks,
Paul

I have never messed with them myself but here is a link for you if you don't already have it.

Also, an old thread at this forum where they were discussing this.

I swear by GoldIcon which can be found at goldshell.com . If not you can try dm's suggestion of favicon.com but it is an online only service. As for your question, .ico files can only hold a maximum of 16 colors, and you can't choose custom colors - just your basic 16. If you want other shades you can try dithering two colors. I think favicon.ico is a great marketing tool. If you're lucky enough to have somebody bookmark you (sorry, "add you to their favorites" ), your favorite will jump out at them everytime they use the pulldown favorites menu.
P.S. DEAR T.W.F. WEBMASTER - Funny this thread poped up. Just today I was thinking about asking you about the favicon.ico for this forum. I've had this site in my bookmarks for years but last week decided to put it in my "quick links" along the top of my browser. Your favicon.ico stands out prominently on my browser at all times, no matter what page I'm on. Problem is that the favicon.ico on my browser is the blue/yellow logo for vBulletin! IMHO you're missing a golden branding opportunity! Especially with this audience.
