download file with "save as"
<a href="example.doc"> will open up the doc file "example" right! But what i want is something like you downloading files/programs from downloads.com. When a link is clicked, it will prompt you where to save the file.
Thank you very much.

The only time xxx.doc will automatically load in Microsoft Word is when the clients system is setup to open .doc extensions with Microsoft Word. Not everybody has Microsoft Word or version 2000 (I don’t think 97 had the web browser integration).
You could put the file in a self-extracting ZIP execute if you defiantly do not want the file to open in Word immediately. You can also tell your visitors to “RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT SAVE AS”.

As far as I know ... a 'standard' set-up will always OPEN a downloaded file if the downloaded file extension is associated with applications on the client machine (e.g. .pdf, .xls, .doc, and - of course, .exe).
The best way to ensure a download, not an app that opens, is to zip the file you want people to download.
