Disappearing center tags

I copied and pasted code into my index page davidbridgen.com to display the date. I added center tags around it and it all worked fine.

I then made a modification to other, unrelated, code further down the page and now find that the date is no longer centered (the center tags have disappeared.)

When I replace the tags in my editor (Namo 3) and go to "Preview" the tags are stripped and I can't get them to stay.

What am I doing that I shouldn't, or what aren't I doing that I should?

Thank you. Sad

What you're doing that you shouldn't? Using tags Sticking out tongue

...goes to look at the code...

...hmmm, what you can do is put it in tags and center the paragraph Smiling

Hi, thank you Renegade.

Yes, that's the way it was (within tags). They get stripped along with the instruction.

Don't put/use tags within tags.

It would seem that your editor is doing some editing for you. Do you have a link to this editor -- perhaps there is some documentation that can help you figure out this conundrum!

If no luck, try using CSS to do the centering in the meantime.

Thank you for the response Suzanne.

Yes, that's what I thought, especially as it worked okay originally.

Sorry, do I have a link to what editor?

This may sound bizarre, but I'd like to critique this - would you be prepared to follow the posting agreement and put this up for our scrutiny?

Obviously you don't have to, but it will help your site in the end.

If you want to comment you may obviously do so, in fact I would welcome it, nothing bizarre inferred.

However, the agreement also states that one should review at least 3 other sites before asking for a critique.
I don't feel that I am competent to do so and think it would be impertinent if I did.

I meant a link like this: http://www.namo.com/ which would help people see what that particular editor supports and obviously what it doesn't, which might help solve the issues you're having.

For instance, now that I know what you're using and have a link, I can see you're using an older version that probably isn't as sophisticated or up-to-date as the newer versions.

And I can find a support link where you can ask THEM why their editor does this weird thing:

Thanks to Suzanne - I think that pretty much covers it Smiling

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have re-loaded Dreamweaver and the date now stays centered in the Preview and the center instruction doesn't get hi-jacked by the editor.

However, when trying to connect to the host to upload changes a window pops bearing the message

"An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. 530 not logged in."

What the devil does that mean?

You haven't logged into the FTP server. Check the "site" part of the Dreamweaver settings and make sure you have entered a username and password...Chances are it's attempting to upload to the public FTP area.

Thank you Jeeves.

I had entered the wrong password - it's been some time since I changed it and remembered it incorrectly.

I shall retire Namo from service and use Dreamweaver again in the future. (I had loaded Namo as I couldn't find the Dreamweaver disc after installing a new OS.)

Now let's see what happens .......

A step in the right direction.

Having corrected the password it now seems to connect.

In the pop up window now it says "Verifying connection..." and at the botom of the Site window it says "Retrieving remote folder information for htdocs/."

However, it's stuck like that. I wonder what else I have/haven't done correctly?

Is that the right directory? I'm afraid I connect directly, I don't use an application like Dreamweaver, but if I did, I'd check to make sure the path was right as well. Smiling

Yes Suzanne, I entered the host name, directory, login name and password just as I had done in Namo.

As a check I connected to the host with Namo and the directory and path names are correct.

I then, more in desperation than hope, previewed the index page again in Namo and the date was then centered once more ! !

I uploaded before it changed its mind!

My problem now is that I don't understand why Dreamweaver isn't connecting corrrectly. It's probably my fault but I can't see how.

Thank you (all) for your patience.

Any more ideas please?

Well, what about trying to learn how to code the site by hand? That way you don't have to rely on a program to do it for you. Also, get yourself a seperate FTP program, if you are using Windows then SmartFTP is a pretty good program Smiling

Contact the hosting company as sometimes you need to enter ../../ for DW or something like that. Your hosts should be able to help you with it.
