Adding a web cam - What would it take? And how much$ ?
I'm wondering about adding a web cam to my site. I'm not refering to live video streaming, just one of those cams that takes a pic and refreshes it periodically.
Besides a cam, what other hardware and software would I need? Any suggestions for books or web pages that describe how to accomplish this?
Thanks

Hi-
I have the Creative Labs Web Cam II. It comes with software that you can use to FTP a new image every 30 seconds, or whatever you want the delay to be. The cam cost $99.
Have fun!

Thanx Casey!
BTW, did the cam include the software to schedule and FTP? If not, what software do you use for that function?
Also, is it a color cam or b/w?

Hey-
Sorry for the wait on the answer The ISpy software that comes with it takes care of scheduling, and uploading itself. The Web Cam II is in pretty, pretty, color
Have fun!

Hi,
I have such a solution runnnig at home as a "security-system".
I used a hauppauge tv-card (WinTV-Radio).
When I bought the card I got a Camera in a cheap set (I initally didn't want it, but it was cheap )
I have a small "allround" linux system running and I just plugged the card and the cam to it.
After the hardware-software worked together I did the following.
1. The cam shots a picture (320x200) every minute (via cron)
2. I scale down the pics (160x100) every hour (via cron+imagemagick)
3. I create a animated gif from the low-res pics.
4. I dial my ISP, upload the anim-gif and 4 "high"-res pics via a small perl script.
This way I can "watch" my home from whereever I am.
The solution is very cheap and has not many features, but it works for me.
I would give you the URL of the output page (and put some banners on it ), but my appartment looks a little ... hmm ... messy.
ciao

ps:
if anyone is interested in the/a linux based solution I'm here to help.

when I get back I maybe clean up my appartment and make some "censored" shots.
I won't ruin my reputation

ps:
red (my linux-server) seems to have gone down last weekend.
I'll fix it when I'm home.

Hey-
JP: I can't tell you exactly why I have the cam...it's just something I bought one time, and use like once a month Kinda handy to take pictures of stuff for friends and family...but otherwise I guess it just sits

I want to add a web cam "how to" guide on our chat software site. This will bring in some traffic, and hopefully sales and heck, it will help some people out too
Anyway, I am about to research this but would value all input and advice on where to look. I plan to start the research process sometime tomorrow. If you have any FAQS, or Informative places to look, in regards to setup, hardware, software and the like, let me know.

Sorry to take so long getting back. Business has been picking up and I've been busy as heck!
JP - Sorry, no adult stuff.
Actually, it's more a long the lines of a security cam. I want to be able to see what damage my cat has been doing all day! On second thought, maybe I don't want to know!
