XP Problem

Hi...my computer has a major problem...heres the story:

First, we decided to get rid of AOL- DSL, so we ordered ToadNet DSL (an always on connection, very reputable in my area). We were told the line was ready, recieved a modem and a disc. We put the disk in and everything was going great. Then we were told to goto a place that was just an IP Address (a division of the ToadNet service, how it is activated), we did and were told to put in our user name and password to activate it. we did, but put in the wrong user name.

Then, not only did the DSL not work, but the computer semi-crashed. We're running XP on a non-network box, and the core of XP crashed. Anything central to the system doesnt work (i.e. My Computer, My Documents, My Briefcase, Windows Media Player, the speakers, etc.). We believe that since we had AOL, a conflict was created when ToadNet went in to the system files (since everyone knows AOL screws with the system files).

We have since then run a Norton ScanDisk, Norton SystemDoctor, and other utiltes to find and fix errors in WinXP. We have run all the possible tests, and "fixed" them. No solutions.

Then we re-installed XP (not a clean, just a un-install but keep the settings), but to no avail. We have talked to ToadNet, and we know that talking to Microsoft or Gateway (maker of the computer) won't help. My dad has talked to his tech support guys at his work, who reccommended and have worked with ToadNet, and no-one knows what is happening. Anybody have any revolutionary ideas? Thanks so much...

Microsoft support == terrible
Ask Gateway -- maybe they know
Otherwise, clean install!
I did that with Windows ME and it was so buggy that even the install disc didn't work right... it kept all my files!
Good luck

Laughing out loud

Did you install any software from the CD? If so, it is likely a problem caused by that. You need to elaborate on the problems you're having with your computer -- what exactly is happening? Can you not connect to the Internet?

aight thanks...
what it was doing was the disc was "customizing" IE (meaning adding their logo...lol) and config-ing our computer...we can connect to the net via AOL DSL, but not ToadNet

how can i elaborate? none of the system tools work (My Briefcase, My Computer, Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer crashes regularly, Windows Media Player, System Restore, and my speakers)

what should i do then? delete ndiswan.sys ? and how do i set up the pppoe? thanks for the help

First of all...never never never go with AOL..why would anybody do that..I'll tell ya why..why = cause they give you crap for free,just to get ya in and then when you install their software..it messes ya pc up because it configures your pc to fit America Off Line!!!...What you need to do is format your HD and do a clean install of XP and then install the software for your new ISP and always remember when you do a major change in windows always back your pc up..cant stress that enough..sorry to be harsh but Dang! stay away from AOL

AOL was my first ISP...and my parents didnt want to change, no matter how much i told them AOL was horrible...then they went to AOL DSL (which is "dial-up style")...*sigh* we're gonna have to do a clean install anyways...thanks
