Why won't my computer connect to the Internet?
This morning when I turned my computer on, to my horror I realised that it wouldn't or couldn't - connect to the internet. I am using a dialup connection and the dialup screen wasn't showing. When I try and lauch IE nothing happens, the dialup window doesn't show up or anything.
I have tried restarting the computer, but the same thing happens. If it helps, I am using Internet Explorer on a Windows 98 OS.
I am planning on getting a new computer soon, a laptop Toshiba, at this rate I am going to have a lot of trouble copying the files.
Any suggestions on how to fix this are very welcome.

Yes, Busy, I have done all those things but it doesn't work. I think I'll just get a new computer quickly. (Also, if you are wondering how I am managing to post without the internet, the answer is I am using our other computer).

Does it give you any error messages?

Just one when I turn it on, it says something like: Unable to connect to the Internet, Work offline | Try again
Someone told me that my computer is on the hurge of 'dying', whatever that means.

Have you tried reinstalling your internet connection setup (through control panel)
I had Win 98 SE before XP pro, 98 used to 'loose' the connection box every now and then, I just made a new connection or changed one of the spares to default and usually worked out fine, once some scumware deleted it for me and tried replacing with dialer (wasn't a porn one).
I just recently got one of the latest XP patches and now I can't get into IE's internet options, says restricted ... even thou I am signed in as Admin. Hardly use IE so am not to worried about it.

Thanks for the advice, Busy, I'll have a go at that.

If worst comes to worst ... A "Dirty Install" of 98 may help you out ... A dirty install is just a running of the setup while booting from the Installation CD ... I have seen this in the past and it related to a corruption in the registry ... Unfortuneately it is also related to certain viruses ...
Good luck

Try running those programs listed above and re-install the internet connection. That has worked recently for me getting on dial up. I was having the same problems as you.
