What OS are you on?
Question: What operating system/distro do you use at home, and at work/school?
Windows XP all over, I had SuSE linux for a while but never really used it. If only it ran DW, PS, and Half-Life

Maybe for developers it isn't, you need to test your software or development in known OS to ensure it delivers what you have developed. Also today way of testing is in virtual machines, but it's almost the same process. You need to install the OS on your virtual machine, in your own machine.
So, it doesn't really is a waste of OS. And I'm on Win7 Pro x64

I'm still using Windows XP and just finished downloading Service Pack 3. I have Ubuntu installed on another desktop, but just don't use it, because Linux can't support a number of my devices - including the wireless card. I did try NDIS wrapper a few months ago, but it was unreliable.

Just don't do what I did when I went cold turkey on to Linux and that was to keep (wanting to) go back to windows.

Agreed. They're definately different. Another common mistake is to compare the two, expecting Linux to have all the same features as Windows.
This is a good article: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm
Linux is not Windows.
Back on-topic: I (am forced to) use Windows 2000 at work and (voluntarily) use SuSE at home. Although I'd quite like to test out some other distros (especially Gentoo, compiling your own kernel certainly looks like it could speed stuff up).
On a seperate note, I also use Cygwin at work. It's nowhere near a full Linux distro, but having had a taste of the power of Linux, I can't get by on Windoze alone.

Has anyone tried XGL out yet? If you haven't give it a go, never before has an OS been so beautiful, but so functional.
It's got the desktop on a rotating 3D cube, just press ctrl-alt-click and drag. Windows have a little life of their own, when you drag them it's like they're squidgy - almost organic - press ctrl and they'll stick to things and peel off as you drag them away from what they're stuck to. Press F12 when you've got lots of windows on the screen and they all jump into clear space, re-arranging themselves and resizing so you can see them all. Alt-tab's been improved so you can see a small image of the window contents. To top it off everything's actually faster because most of the work is being done by the graphics card.
Am personally not good enough with Linux enough to actually install it, but have tried the Live CD which you can get at: http://kororaa.org/static.php?page=static060318-181203
It's a Live CD, which basically means that you download an ISO file, stick it on a CD and boot from it. Instant Linux! Bear in mind the following:
Although:
Go on give it a go, you'll love it, trust me!

And the second reason I still not upgrade to new Win 0 Vista is 64bit system. It`s not a good idea to use it as 32bit. So for it I must upgrade my PC. I did not whant to do it now....

Sounds like fun nichevalue. I work for a company that makes credit card terminals, so lots of embedded development there.
Although I don't work on that stuff, I mess about with web based interfaces, databases and such. What does your company do?
Funny that you use Windows at home after you've had a taste of Linux?! Doesn't it drive you mad that there's no Vim? What happens when you want to pipe the output of find to grep?
I found it simple, absolutely fine, even on my - reasonably - old machine (Athlon XP 3200, 512 meg of RAM). In fact I was very impressed that I could play Mahjong and surf the Internet even while the installer was doing it's thing.
Where did you hear it's difficult?

I bought a HP laptop with Vista Home Premium... *&^%$#!
Windows Explorer constantly crashes, had to install a filemanager app (and I generally use SmartFTP like a filemanager when I am working/uploading anyway)
And periodically stops connecting to my wifi network - not sure if it's the router (an old Netgear b/g -- getting ready to upgrade to dual-band n) or os, sometimes I have to reboot, could be both causing problems.
I thought about rolling back to XP but I have to admit I like the Aero theme translucent stuff. And I think it's hilarious that we still use command prompt for stuff like tracert.
I also installed Ubuntu Hardy Heron (wubi - in Windows) but I have not gotten my wifi working - followed about 5 recipes for setting up Broadcom wlan in HP Pavilion laptops specifically, downloaded and built latest ndiswrapper etc. Ethernet network working fine, though. Not really planning to switch to Linux, just curious.

I Have Ubuntu 8.04/Win XP/Win Vista installed on my main desktop. I use Ubuntu 99% of the time, and the other OS's are installed because.....uh.....I can't think of a reason. I only booted into Vista a couple times, mainly to see what the Vista experience score is for my AMD Phenom Quad Core Black Edition .
My Laptop has WinXP/Ubuntu, but I mainly use WinXP on that one - for some work stuff including Quickbooks.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet! How did that happen. I was sure I had!
At work I'm on OSX & Ubuntu. I recently got a docking station for my Thinkpad laptop and a KVM switch so I can use it with my big Mac monitors. V. nice! No more shoulder pain!
I don't know that I would have chosen Mac myself - it was left here by the last guy in my job. The monitors are nice. I don't like OSX so much though. The file manager drives me insane (no address bar and annoying browse views!). I use Ubuntu for more serious development, OSX for browsing/mail and anytime * need Adobe apps. Now that I have the KVM switch I might move my email to the laptop...
At home I just have Ubuntu. It's my favourite OS. I'm really happy to be free of Windows now, even if the Mac isn't perfect.

I have Opensuse, Ubuntu & Mandriva on my Dummy PC's and i have Windows 2008 Enterprise Server running on my home server which is just for personal use and household gaming...
I am planning on going onto FreeBSD for a server soon but i may get a smaller server and install FreeBSD onto that...
I have the legal copies of all of these because various one's are free and for the Microsoft ones... I have a licesnse for the MSDN through college.
I love it.
It's great to have access to loads of Microsoft Software for Free.

At school I use XP because it is all our school has now. Tried Ubuntu on an older PC but it didn't recognize the graphics card for some reason
But I vote for OS X all the way as the best.

I don't think even Microsoft themselves have enough money to pay me to use XP/Vista again.
Years ago I had a dual boot XP and Gentoo, but never installed Gentoo again on the new PC, but recently I decided after having years of direct OS issues and 3rd party software having failures and crashes and generally causing havoc on my PC I finally went back to Linux...without MS on dual boot this time.

I have 64 bit Vista on both my desktop and laptop - and I love it.
But I'm impressed with almost every current major operating system. With the right specs they're so powerful and such a pleasure to use and it would seem churlish to complain about them.
I've used some pretty awful OSs over the years - whatever it was that ran on the old BBC computers, Win 98/ME, the iMac, XP when it was new - that modern OSs seem miraculous.
Since taking the plunge and buying hardware running Vista I've been delighted with it and find it hard to comprehend the hostility you hear towards it everywhere. Perhaps its taken a while for hardware to grow into its requirements - my opinion might be different if I was attempting to run it on the recommended minimum specs.

Ok, that is it!
I decided to try Windows Vista Business, just to be fair but it did not go down so well with me.
It was slow, annoying in such that it kept closing on me so many times that i am back to the good old Windows XP.

Windows XP on a laptop.
Other machines: Ubuntu 8.10 on AMD64 Shuttle, currently US because a faulty Fan failed cooking my RAM. I've had to fall back on a pre-Y2K Pentium which runs Linux (Slax and Puppy) and which has been pressed into service since the demise of the Shuttle. Slax and Puppy are both built on Slackware and are happy running on the low-spec machine. (http://slax.org and http://puppylinux.org )
Laptop also dual-boots with Slax (same partition), but I only really use that if I want to run virus scans on XP.
Also run a Gentoo VM on top of windows XP using Colinux. (http://colinux.org )
Mind you, Gentoo is really pointless on Colinux because Gentoo is optimised for your hardware but the VM can only access the hardware through XP. Still.
Running the colinux VM on top of Windows I am able to run a LAMP Server on a windows machine and the server behaves like another machine on the network.
Good for test beds, etc.

I'm with XP SP2 edition. Its quiet reliable. Even after years, most of the PC users prefer it. How about the latest Microsoft's OS ...Windows 7? Could anybody provide a first hand experience over it? Actually I got a message that I need to upgrade my OS to Win XP SP3. Should I consider this option or else go with Windows 7 or just keep quiet with the presnt XP SP2?

I haven't really tried the Windows 7 and I am still thinking if I will upgrade my very reliable WIndows XP over it.
I've been with Win XP for years now and I think I am very much comfortable using it. I tried Windows Vista on my Desktop and I am not really into it, so I downgraded my desktop back to Windows XP.
Though, I have friends saying Windows 7 is quite a good OS. They preffer it over XP. So I'm still thinking about it.

Well, in my personal computer I'm using Windows XP as I find it very user friendly and fast. It's been my OS for almost 5 years now and never had any problem provided that you will just update some software when using internet. As with my laptop I am using Windows 7 but these days I find it very slow compare to XP so I'm planning to change it to XP because I cannot take the slow each time.

In office, we've Windows 7 installed on our systems.
While at home, I've recently installed Windows 8 (dual boot with Windows 7) on my laptop. I've kept windows 7 as well, that in case I do not like Windows 8, I can simply remove it from my system. But honestly speaking, I did like Windows 8 to some extent. Like for example the new start screen with Tiles UI looks quite good. Then I found some great apps in Windows 8 as well. Still there are few apps available in it, but if windows 8 can have more apps (like there are in iPhone and Android), it can be really good.
But then we see the lack of start button might not be everyone's like. Some have criticized it as well. So my opinion about windows 8 is quite mixed. It is good in some ways but might bring criticism in some other ways.
Lack of desktop gadgets was also an issue I found with windows 8.
