Vista Preview
Well I got a hold of windows vista beta 1 (2 is out already). So far here is what I can tell you...
- New style, dark blue (almost black), mix of xp and classic. My rateing 9 of 10.
- Start menu no longer cascades. Looks like the xp style at first but when you press the "all programs" button the left area changes showing the folders and programs. Still hard to navagate with a keyboard. My rateing 5 of 10.
- New file explorer, too many options!!! there is about 15 diffrent ways to view each folder. I dont understand it! I might like it in time... My rateing 5 of 10.
- All the anoying features of sp2!
Thats all I can tell you after useing it for an hour. I'll keep you updated. I gotta work on drivers...

I take back what I said about the start menu. After a little more playing around I found it is quite usefull. The start menu is based on a search. You press the windows key and your foucs in on a search box on the bottom of the menu.
As you type possable matched are desplayed in the programs area. All you have to do it type till you see the program you want and press enter. Much better!

How does the eye candy look; someone said they couldn't get it to work on their graphics card. Does it work well?
And there need be no contest, JeevesBond, for Linux has already won!

omg the new default background is grass! Its soo sexy! lol. Ya the video card works, the backgrounds are sexy like they where in XP. The new icons default at large. You need to make a custom theme to make them smaller. The Icons have finally cough up with linux and macs. 3D and crap.
On the other hand... there is the new folder icon. It sucks to put it nicely. When the icon is huge it looks kind of like a folder. And now it shows the contents of the folder in the icon. So if there is a image in that folder you see the image. Cool right? WRONG! Each folder has to render after you open the parent folder.
Then that brings me to the small icons. It is soo hard to get the computer to list icons. It wants to make them huge. Lets say the window is 500 X 400. You can only see 6 folders. EXTREAMLY annoying. Then when you do get them small you cant tell what they are. Its a square with a crack in it. Or a rocket next to it. I might post some screen shots in a few. I will probably create my own folder icon and distribute it.

It is much change using windows explorer vista to xp's explorer (other than the folder sizes!)? Usability wise?

I hate the new explorer. I might just need to give it time though.
positives....
Looks nicer
bread crumbs instead of a Uri
negatives...
No "file" "view" "tools" or anything like that by default. You must press alt for them to show up.
Where there once was a file tree. Is now a bunch of completely random options. like "authors" and "rating". Apparently Microsoft wants us to use file summary.
Then there is a summary section at the bottom. Where it tells you everything about the file you selected except what it is. I guess its so you can rate the file with out having to right click....
don’t get me started on the file rating....
It used to be you opened "My documents" and viewed everything in that folder. Now you open my documents and there are NO FOLDERS! There is "my music" and "my pics" but you cant get to them through my documents? and there are some random files that i unzipped to my desktop in there!! I don’t get it!!!
