Motherboard Switches On A Server

I have changed many motherboards on lets say a win98 system and keeping the same windows installation on the same hard drive. After one or two reboots with installing the motherboard drivers, everything runs just fine BUT:

Now imagine this bit of fun.

1. Your running a NT file system server, but want to upgrade the sucker with a nice new motherboard & CPU, without changing the hard drive.

2. You shut the server down, and do the cpu/motherboard switch as fast as you can (5-10min). Turn the machine on.

3. And BOOM, bluescreen saying hard drive is inaccessble. (hmmmm, I want to keep the same NT/website installation and save hours of time)

4. So, I think, hmmm, maybe the new motherboard is not picking up the hard drive the same way as the old motherboard. So I set the hard drive up in the BIOS to the same way as the old motherboard and same blue screen during boot up.

5. Ok, so now I put back the old motherboard and it boots just fine.

6. This is not much fun. Why does it do this? It seems to work fine on win98 systems, but not NT.

7. This of course works if I reformat the partition and reinstall everything from scratch, but that is not really what I want to do.

HELP ME IM GOING BALD

Can we have more info...

old vs. new motherboard?

using new RAM?

When does the blue screen appear? I'm assuming windows does boot. If windows boots, then the motherboard does see the hard drive.

You can generally get away with changing a motherboard in 98. Just delete the Enum key in the Registry and let 98 detect all of the new devices. NT has no plug and play so you can't do this. 2000 or XP, you can sometimes get away with this. If it is a Server, forget about it. You need to reinstall NT from scratch and move all of the data.

Well, I was going from a asus a7a to a DFI motherboard.

But this has happened before, it does not seem to matter what motherboards I am switching to.

I keep the same memory as well.

Its a 2000pro running IIS 5.0. The error screen happens during the
"Starting Windows 20000" screen.

I set all the heads/cyl, etc to be exactly the same as with the old motherboard.

What I have ended up doing is backing up the wwwroot folder, in another partition and just format the c partition, install everything, and just copy and paste the wwwroot folder.

If I backup the web onto a cd, it gives much more problems because the web has been changed to "read only" and have to follow a sick procedure from microsoft, which involves deleting windows files, changing attributes to others and much more fun than ever wanting.
