Modem Troubles
I'm using an internal diamond supra express 56kv9.0 modem, Windows Me on a PII 300mhz with 256Mb RAM...
Sometimes when I go to dial it comes up with the message
"modem not responding, it may be switched off or in use blah blah....ensure it is switched on and connected...yadda yadda..."
Task manager says only systray and explorer are running so nothing else is using the modem and it's internal so it doesn't have an on/off switch.
Modem diagnostics says "Cannot open port"
The only way I have found to get the modem working again is to re-boot the entire machine, and even then I sometimes have to re-boot several times before it behaves. I've tried re-installing the modem, re-installing Windows,(Win Me and Win98), updating the driver and even removing the modem card, re-fitting it, formatting & re-partitioning the hard disk then starting from scratch.
This problem only happens sometimes but is very annoying when I have several windows open and my ISP dumps me for two minutes of inaction, then I go to redial and this happens. GRRRR!
Please, any suggestions?

Just a guess, but perhaps it's a problem on your ISP's end?

Try this little trick.
Reboot your computer.
Go into the BIOS.
Change Plug and Play OS to No.
Save and reboot.
That should fix that pesky problem and it won't mess up anything else.
Here is diamonds support site for more info.

Will disabling the p&p in the bios cause problems with USB?
