modem not working
I had two lengthy phone sessions with tech support at my isp and they seem to think that I need to reinstall my modem driver. I'm a total layman when it comes this kind of stuff. So I was wondering whether people on the forum, who I have really come to trust, think I can do this on my own, or do I have to bring my computer in to the shop, which is a big hassle and expense to get to.
I've got windows 2000 professional. and a conextant soft 56 modem.
The modem works a bit for a few minutes after turning on the computer. Then it slows down to the point that the browser can no longer display pages from the internet.
To send this message I'm going to have to shut down the computer, turn it back on again, and then connect to the internet long enough to get to the this website, send the message and log out.
What do you all think. Should I try to do this on my own?
What do I need to know or be carefull of before I start?

Ouch, a Conexant modem. First make sure that you have the most current driver. Check here to determine the most current driver. It is no problem to install a modem driver but it can be a real pain in the butt to get some of them to work.

Thanks for the url. Looks really informative.
But practically speaking, I've got cds with drivers for all the componants of my computer which were probably used to set it up. And everything was working fine for ablut 6 months. If I just look for the modum driver on my cds and install it like any other program, should that work ok?
BTW, What did you mean by "ouch!"?

There are some W2k drivers over there. Reboot, who is the modem guy hangs out over at PC Mech Tech Forum. Why don't you post your question over there in the Periperals section. He should be able to help you out.

Hmmmm....sounds like the problem I am having. My connection seems to poop out. But, in my case, I don't think it's the modem. Netscape seems to poop out, but if I switch to MIE, everything goes along fine for a while, then I get disconnected, then I can't get a line for more than 16,200 bps. I don't know, it may be a combination. I'm going to solve this by getting cable.
