Missing Notepad.exe....win XP
Today I went to open a text document in "MY Documents" and a box popped up stating "Windows cannot find Notepad.exe"
Whats up with this?
I've never had any probs before and haven't done any new downloads and my Virus protector shows no virus's.
I have no problem getting into "My Documents" but can't open any files because it states that "Notepad.exe cannot be found" and it asks me to type in a C:/ .......... file to use instead.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thx.....backlasher55

did you check if it's there?
it could have been deleted or something, check C:\WINDOWS to see if you have
NOTEPAD.EXE in that directory... if you do than i'm out of ideas.. if you don't then
it must have been deleted renamed or something like that
hope it helps
ohh one more is it a txt document u'r trying to edit?
you might want to check the reg.. to see if you have the correct settings for
the software that is suposed to open this type of document

I doubt it was a accidental deletion of the notepad.exe file, as on XP (and 2000 and NT), the OS will automatically replace the missing copy from the /windows/system32 directory, and even if that one is deleted, it auto replaces it from /windows/system32/dllcache (protected hidden system directory).
I learned this the hardway when I went to replace notepad.exe with UltraEdit's notepad.exe that will lauch UltraEdit. When I replaced the notepad.exe file, warning popped up that it was removed, and when the final copy in /windows/system32/dllcache was deleted, it warned me again and asked me to instert WinXP cd to restore it.
(you can find more details here , and download a great text editor to replace notepad so you don't have to restore it )

Thx for all the info,
I did a check of the registry and found nothing wrong there, so I did a system restore to a couple days back and all is back to running fine now.
I'm still puzzled as to why I lost "notepad.exe" in the first place.
Thx again

Did you check for the virus bob mentioned? It could still be roaming about your system deleting stuff if you haven't done a virus check.
