Laptop or Desktop?
Which do you use most, a laptop or a desktop? Which one do you like better?
I only have a desktop and I really like it. I kinda wish I had a laptop to take places, but they are really expensive and they aren't upgradeable like a desktop. I don't know if I should buy one or not. I really want two 24 inch LCD displays from dell. Four feet of desktop real estate would be nice...

I like the desktop, you can easily upgrade things, modify specs cheaply. And in the long run, less hassle to maintain... On the other hand my laptop helps me when I need to work away from home... Its easy to lug around especially when Im having a party and I need a sound source, I usually use the laptop...

Laptops have their place, as originally planned work. They do not make good big time use friends. Two of my sons have one, one uses it for away from home convenience, the other bought his for his sole computer. He has been through three hard drives, a video card, and two batteries in about two years.
I wouldn't have one unless it was mandatory for my job, then I might think about quitting my job, and finding something else. My desktop machine is running on two hard drives, and a video card that are all over 7 years old - still kicking. In fact my board is around that old also.
Before you accuse me of running a dinosaur, I will state I like dinosaurs. This machine has a AMD 600 thunderbird chip, and a AMD server board. Its just as fast as a 1 gig if not faster, and rock stable. The only thing I have replaced was the crappy DVD drive, with a Lighton burner about a month ago.
So don't even go laptop around me they SUCKKK. If you will notice my underware is up in the crack of my a**, and I have been in a real choice mood for the last few days.

My home computer is really old too but I'm planning on replacing it soon. It's just getting too clunky and I'm running out of hard drive space .... although if I was running linux that might not be an issue
I thought about getting a laptop but I think I've decided against it now. I use one at my mom's and at my boyfriend's when I'm there and I do like it. It's nice to have that mobility, but I don't think I could do a lot of work on it. I find the keyboard position to be awkward and if I had to spend long hours on it I'd get repetitive stress injuries for sure. Of course, you could get a laptop and hook it up to a regular keyboard and mouse if you needed to do a lot of work on it. I thought about doing that, and keeping my old monitor too.
It helps now that Liam is (hopefully) going to be moving here in a few weeks with his laptop. Wouldn't make sense for us to have two laptops and no desktop until he can get his desktop machines moved over here Wait... how many computer is that?? 4 ?!?!? 5 if I don't get rid of my old one... We're going to need a bigger apartment What geeks, eh? Well, really, it's just him because only one of them is mine

We have 2 desktops *one for hubby and one for me!* and 3 laptops. One is mine, one is my daughters *it went to her when I bought a new laptop* and one is my hubby's. We use the laptops on trips. Sometimes I use it when I'm sick on the couch and I want to use email or surf.
My laptop is a Gateway just like the previous one. I wish I had bought one with a DVD writer, this one only does CD burning, but, everything else I love. It's got a widescreen that's super bright.
My desktop is a HP/Compaq and I had a few problems with the DVD burner when I purchased it, but it's been a good computer so far. Hubby has an Emachine which is a Gateway. No problems with that at all, we bought it in 2004 for under $600 including the monitor. You can get them at Wal-Mart right now for under $400.

since were talking about it, I constructed my PC from scratch, built it from the ground up, chose the MOBO, put in the CPU and the likes... it was painstakingly exhaustive but it gave me the satisfaction I needed... I set it up so I can updgrade specs for 3 more years until I totally replace them... I got a stacked external HDDs for my files so I have no worries in terms of running out of space...
My laptop is rarely used now, and neices are using it now for their projects, since I only use the LT when I go more than a mile away. Although when I walk around the mountains I use my PPC, (coz of the GPS) and connects well to the net, and had used it to post here at TWF before, hard to type on unless you lug around a foldable keyboard... Well anyways, i would really depend what your using it for... I like the desktop hands-down, i still have my old K6 from HS, and im using it now as my music server...

I prefer a laptop's keyboard to that of a desktop. I just find it easier to use.
Having said that, I'd rather have a desktop over a laptop since you can upgrade it and I find it's better overall

How about buying a laptop and having the money for the two LCDs for a desktop upgrade?

We have a total of 4 desktops, though one is acting as an arcade and another as a Linux server. The other two are a Mac Mini and an iMac. Just a few weeks ago, we got rid of our ancient IBM laptop, which used to be my wife's main computer. At some point in the next year I will likely be purchasing a MacBook (laptop).
So for me, it's a mixture of the two, though my preference is desktop whenever possible.

I use a laptop as I like the mobility and I can take it away for work etc.
However, I worry about the reliability of my laptop as I know a few people who have had a lot of problems with them.

Every coin has two sides. Laptop and Desktop both are useful for us. I am using Laptop because these are reasons :
* Convenience
* Time more efficiently with a laptop
* Low power consumption
* Battery power
* LCD technology

Laptops have a great lead in terms of their portability. If you carry a laptop with you, your applications and documents are always immediately available. With a wireless card, your laptop can also access the Internet while on the go, so you have more places to do research, check your email, and be more productive.

bettry timing is extended now a days.
so there is no issue due to which you prefer desktop instead of laptop.

I usually use my laptop any time and anywhere, and sometimes mobile. It was so hassle to use desktop, for you cannot make your self comfortable, unlike in laptop you can use it anywhere the way you wanted to use it.

Hi friends
I think that Desktop and Laptop both have some advantages and some drawbacks. If i want to play games or want to do work fastly then i give preference to desktop and during traviling or to watch movie then i am in favour of laptop. In short i can say, it depends on our work and place, which one is better.

Desktop is the best if you don't need the mobility of a portable computer. It is easily upgradable and it is easy to fix. You can also play the latest games on it.
I prefer laptop while during travels though. It provide enough computing power that allows me to do what I need to do while having no access from my desktop.

It depends on the propose of use. If you want to use for programming then laptop will be suitable. If you want to use for graphics then i will suggest you to buy a powerful desktop but however it will be beyond your budget. So think about your propose 1st and then your budget.

I use both laptop and desktop. A laptop is portable and you can easily carry it anywhere and a desktop is also good if you want to work at one place for a long time, So if you are moving a lot then go for a laptop and also if we see the performance, desktop performance is high as compared to a laptop. So it totally depends on your requirement.
