Ahhh. I need to chime in here.....
I am the luckiest guy around..... you can touch me if you just have too..
..see... We just by luck happen to be one of the first cities in the nation to
get fiber optics as a beta test city. I got it for $5 more than DSL ..
.... nope I didn't stutter... lots of hardware: battery back-up, router, some kind of expensive looking box on the side of the house that converts from fiber to cat5 and
phone line ... for $5 more a month... .. BIG SMILE.... is that lucky??????
example of how fast it is:
While I was setting up my fiber account (my wife got hers set up free cause she
was home) I managed somehow to bomb out MS Internet Exployer... Yeah, you got
it, it is a beast to get out of your system, I think it has claws. .. .. so finally here I go with Netscape to MS web site and down load a new copy of MSIE ... Cause they got you and ya almost gota have it ..right? Anyway, my download manager popped up and disappeared. .. I'm thinking I must of bombed that too... nope .. I had the whole 6+ megabite program that fast.. !!
...geeeze... but it is only as fast as the host server sending out the files. Microsoft has a fast one!
..... like I said, it was pure luck getting fiber. I ain't complaining none!

The worst suggestion of a life time may be the catalyst to the grandest idea ever, speak and listen.
but the real one to get, is FreshDownload
it's free and it works really well. I've used it for several years and it acclerates the download speed. It includes pause/resume downloads and i've found it pretty helpful. just an insight though!
~also, spyware may decrease the performance of your system. Download Ad-Aware by Lavasoft and this will search and destroy for you. For advanced users, use HijackThis. Remember to have an anti-virus installed like Norton or McAfee.~

Just use Opera browser; it comes with one free. Or, the best one is Go!Zilla. It's super fast and allows you to restart if you get disconnected and what not.
I know this thread is old but if you have Windows XP you may like FreeDownloadManager.
I've tried about 50+ different dl managers and it's by far the best IMO.
It pretty much does what wget can do but it integrates into firefox via the flashgot plugin.
Why I use it:
1. I'm on 56k so I need a good DL manager.
2. No adware
3. You can actually use FDM's "SiteExplorer" feature and have it search inside a URL for specific file types.
4. After collecting those file types you can have it automatically download them in succession.
5. I can limit speeds
6. Simple user interface
7. it will automatically search for mirrors and pick the fastest ones.
8. Fully customizeable
I could go on and on about why I love this thing but I'll stop now.
Like I said, it has most of the features wget has but without the command lines and it works transparently through firefox via the FlashGot plug-in.
I also like Net Transport and GetASFStream for collecting movie streams.
The one that comes with Safari on OSX is pretty good.
