Cannot find server
I am disgusted and grasping at straws here guys. Hope someone can give me some advise.
Several weeks ago, I started getting page cannot be displayed errors with "server cannot be found" in the title bar while surfing occasionally. It was mainly happening when i used my google toolbar to search with. I had IE 5.5 and thought that maybe that was it so I upgraded to IE 6.
A week later, the problem is now more than occasionally and on several occasions, my computer went offline by itself.
For the past three days, I have had a heck of a time just surfing. Page cannot be dislpayed errors all over the place, email not working at times. Can't remember the exact email error but it said something about a port (i think).
I keep my temp files cleared and do scan disk and defragment regularly so this isn't the problem.
I contacted Earthlink (my ISP) this AM and they seem to think that is is my modem and told me to do the following which didn't work. Still getting errors:
Note: I have a Creative Modem Blaster V92

EarthLink adds support for new internet protocols after they become available, have been tested and proven to be as reliable as our other services. Our engineers are currently looking into the new technology, but no decisions or estimated time frames for v92 availability have been made available yet. If you buy a v92 modem now, it will work with our service because the modems are backwards compatible with v90, so you should not have much to worry about. If you currently have a v92 modem and are experiencing connection issues, your best bet would be to disable v92 and enable v90. On most v92 modems, an initialization string of AT+MS=v90,0 will do the job (if you need assistance entering that string, please let me know), but if it doesn't you would need to check the modem's documentation or contact the modem/computer manufacturer regarding the proper string to disable the v92 portion of the modem and enable v90.

Any ideas from you computer geeks besides going around the world with my ISP again?
Sorry for the long post.

Generally a Server not Found error is caused by something wrong with a DNS server. A few weeks back I had some problems with my ISP at work. When I tried pinging the DNS servers, only one of them, the secondary one came back with a response. So I was receiving errors because the DNS server was overloaded and offline. The easiest way to tell if it is a DNS problem is if you can reach the site by IP address, not Domain name, then there are DNS problems.
Earthlink's customer support is useless. It is highly doubtful that it is the modem since it is not a new modem. The problem is probably an overloaded network on their end.

That is what the guy that built my computer just told me.
I contacted them again via online chat and the tech support dude told me that I needed to update my drivers. He gave me a link and when i went there it said that there were no updates for my driver. Then he told me to change the initialization string. When i told him that is what I did with the other guy during the first tech support contact I think he pulled some more numbers out of his butt.
I also asked him if there was anyway possible that the problem could be on Earthlinks end and not mine before I go changing a bunch of stuff on my computer unnesessarily and he said, "No. Please reboot the system and the issue will be resolved."
*sarcastic laugh*
Was the issue resolved? NO!! It wasn't. I was booted off again just after I rebooted with his changes.
To do this can't i just do a whois lookup and get the IP numbers there and paste them into my browser? Like http://123.45.67.89???
If the answer is yes, then I did that and neither would come up but then again not much will with all the errors that I am getting. This is the third time I have tried replying to this post.
Wish I wasn't so impatient. Oh well, will deal with this tomorrow. I have to go to work. Thanks mariv

Hmm.... if it's not a DNS problem (which it sounds like it would most likely be), I would check my computer for viruses just to be on the safe side.

Easiest way to get an IP address is to open up a DOS window and type in ping domainname. This will return the IP address unless the ISP's DNS server is acting up.

Don't know what your phone lines are like over there but we get "noise" on our lines. If what you suggested happened here, first thing I'd do is phone telecom (ph company) and get them to do a noise check on the line. 9 out of 10 times its the line and a service guy has to check and find the fault - usually at the connection at the roadside post.
