Alternative to Winamp?
Does anyone know of any good alternatives to Winamp? I have been using winamp for years but had some problems with them the other day which is sending me looking for something else. I was actually trying to upgrade to the pro version and they wouldn't let me pay! They had the worst error message too - basically, "sorry, this doesn't work, try another payment option". ?!#@??!#!?@? I sent a message to their support people and never heard anything back. Irritating.

Winamp is just a music player right?
If it is, try XMPlay. It is a very, very lightweight program (on system resources). All it does is play music, there are no playlist features to it. You might not like that, though.

I would reccomend iTunes as well... great if you want to buy legal music files online. Also for a basic and lightweight (but not that attractive) mp3 player try foobar2000. I also used to be a big fan of Sonique, but like Winamp all development on this has ceased since it was bought out by the big boys (aol for winamp, lycos for sonique).

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I'll try some of them out this weekend. Do any of these rip CD's? The reason was trying to upgrade winamp was to get the CD ripping feature (trying to recreate a mixed tape I had in high school).

I purchased the pro version of WinAmp about 3 weeks ago for the same reason, faster ripping of CDs. At that time the payment system worked fine, but it does go through a 3rd party processing company.
Before purchasing the pro version, I never messed with their MEDIA listings. I was surprised what is available for free online. Glad they let you bock certain ratings of videos since I use this at church.

I was using the "international" payment system so it must have been something with that. Anyway, I'm downloading itunes right now so I'll check that out first.

iTunes worked great for ripping and burning but not so much for playing. I'm sort of particular about how I like to play my music (randomize playlist then rearrange if there's an upcoming song I don't want to hear. This is expecially important if I'm on before bed and want to hear more low key music). Ther ewas something else it coudln't do but If orget hwat that was. Gee, I can't type today! So, iTunes for CD burning, winamp still for playing. Works okay... I do like the iTunes type interface much better. Those skins on wwinamp look cool but it's hard to find stuff with the tiny buttons.

I personally like the older versions of WinAmp...not the newer version(s).
I wouldn't pay for a program like that, either.
I'm not sure of any other program, but as you can see there is quite a selection above. No matter what, though, I think WinAmp pwns all of them...

Windows Media Player 10 has "5.1 audio" support plus dvd support and all else new, A Built in cool CD ripper where you can name lists immediately before rip. If soundcard is 5.1, any standard audio music will be processed as 5.1 audio.
Musicmatch Jukebox, when there was no itunes this was the best. With itunes it is Still the Best...
for light foot print, good quality sound and fast load time, try SRS labs cinematic mp3, or cinemati either of the two the other has editing support. the other is a plain player like winamp only better.

No worries, dynanmite. It's always cool to bring up old threads if there's something you can add to the conversation.
(There is a lot of great software out there for free, and that's a wonderful thing, but at the same time people put a lot of work into some of those programs. The least I can do is show my appreciation with a little $$. $15 isn't much for a program as good as winamp.)

What is wrong with windows media player? I have found most luck with it. It will retrieve all album info automatically. If you don't want to use windows media player because it does not rip to mp3, easy solution, just buy the plugin for $10 to rip to mp3!

You have to buy a decoder for the DVD support in WMP though, so it is hardly ideal.

I generally find WMP to be rather clunky and annoying. iTunes is so light and easy. I've recently discovered the "smart playlist" functionality which is really cool.

I like WMP because their music database seems to be very accurate.
Reasons I don't like CDEX:
1) song data is user submitted
2) you cannot rip CDs with various artists and get the correct artist in the tag, because it will only support 1 artist per CD
