Hey I'm looking to improve my photoshop and fireworks/ illustrator skills, anyone know of any good resources I can use (prefably free).

I've come across some decent looking tutorials on PSdtuts.com. For Illustrator, Veerle often posts good tutorials.
Also try surfing StumbleUpon with graphic design in your topics of interest - I often come across good tutorials that way.
Photoshop and Illustrator are really complex programs that are difficult to learn thoroughly. If you have the time & money I'd recommend taking a course.

I am not a "designer" but I think Smashing Magazine has some good resources - video tutorials etc...

I always recommend the Lynda.com stuff. I gave a few of my friends some videos i got from there and they thought they were great.

Well not sure if you have been advised of this before, but if you simply go online to the photoshop site, they usually have free tutorials. Or just type in adobe photoshop free tutorials. Hope this helps.
