You mean submitting your site to web directories? It really depends. A lot of people will come along here and tell you that directories are a great way to build backlinks. In reality most directories are very low quality and won't help a whole lot.

It depends on:

  • Which directories you submit to - some directories are basically spam, others are high quality resources of hand-picked sites. Look at the sites listed in the directory - are these high quality or does any site get in?
  • How you submit - don't use automated submission policies. Try to vary the title and description you submit to your site. Consider submitting deeper level pages rather than just the home page.
  • How your site is ranking now - if you have no backlinks now then low quality directories may help. If you already have a decent ranking then a bunch of low quality links won't make much of a difference. Also, it's good to have a variedd backlink profile. That is, you should have a variety of types of links from a varity of site types (blogs, forums, directories, news sites etc.). If you just have directories or forum signatures it's not going to help much to get more (unless they're really high quality!)

I posted some good references on directory link building in this topic:

Remember that search engines only want to count links that are editorially given based on merit. That means that some human thought the site was good and wanted to refer others. They also really don't like being manipulated. Think about whether the direcotory is there for regular people or for webmasters trying to get backlinks.

Hello Megan,

I agree with Domain submission in good directories can help you to get high PR and traffic to your site.

I didn't mean to say that directories are not effective, just that they are more effective under certain circumstances. General statements like "submitting to directories can help to improve your PR" are misleading because in reality it's more complicated than that.

We know that Google did devalue a bunch of directories last fall and I won't be surprised if they do that again. Make sure any directories you submit to actually rank (and not PR rank, SERP rank) and do your best to estimate whether they will continue to rank in the future.

Hi Epathchina,

First of all you are welcomed to great forum. if you are talking about directory submission , I want to tell you that directory submission can help you to get high PR and to gain quality traffic to your site, but the submission should be in quality directories.

Some people say it is not as effective as it used to be but that could be true of most things personally i think it does still have value and i still spend a little time every now and then submitting to a few.

Its certainly not effective as it used to be. For my SEO projects i logged the Google ranking of all directory sites/pages and even strong ones are down to PR0 or not even ranked at all.

This would suggest that Google at least deems these directories in value as next to nothing (and they're right). Having said that, when it comes to ranking against your competitors, its better to have next to nothing than nothing at all!

Hello,

Quality directories are the good options for quality backlinks. They can help your site to get good PR.

Directories can help with anchor text and to rank certain key phrases and also provide backlinks, but it is more beneficial for new sites that have no backlinks yet and pages that are trying to rank well for long tail keywords.
Directory links worth so little because directories themselves have little value.

Is anyone aware of an instance whereby Directory websites actually work in a negative way toward a site? I've been submitting mine to lists compiled by folk who seem to be 'in the know' however I have been submitting to alot of other directories on the basis that i thought to have more would be a good thing. On the grounds that some directories would be considered spam whould this count against you if you were registered to it?

Not that I know of. You shouldn't be penalized for other sites that link to you.

However, you should always use your head when deciding to submit to a directory. Does this look like something search engines would want to count? This article from SEOmoz has a good list of factors to consider.
