I just revamped my site - Misguided Thoughts and, like a proud parent, I'm showing it off!
The old site had a dark theme (#333333 on the page background) and I wanted to make it more readable - thus the white. And I've also tried to make it not look like a lot of other Drupal sites - I think I've succeeded in some places, but you can still tell...
I'm not posting this in the Critique area because, honestly, I'm still criticizing it. The sidebar doesn't work for me. At all. And I'm not sure I like the colors, either. But I think it's a step in the right direction!

I am no designer but it looks pretty good to me.
I like the main column, I agree the sidebar needs some work, I see you are trying to make it a dark bg to contrast but it's hard to select colors that work well on light & dark backgrounds, and using a bunch of different colors could get pretty busy. My suggestion would be to lighten up the gray some.
The comments are good too, I would reduce the size of the comment headers vertically.
And I like the header.
The footer - I don't like the way it breaks at "tv" inside the parentheses and I would remove the period after the Drupal link. The links in the footer are kind of hard to read because of the color.
No it does not look much like a Drupal site - it looks to me more like a WordPress theme.
It's getting there...

Hey Net... err, Dec... errr, Hey, you.
I agree that the colors just aren't... right. When it was black and gray, it was pretty easy to work with. I'm tinkering with blue to put around the content with a beige or light/off yellow for the sidebar (color pallets and me aren't really friends.) Make it a bit brighter and more inviting.
(Maybe I'll just get rid of the sidebar boxes... hmmm....)
I'm not concerned with the footer right now. I doubt most people look at it and decide they'll never come back because of it!
But I really do like the layout (and that it doesn't look like Garland!) so I'll just spend time with the colors and such.
