Iomega Zip Drive lawsuit

Dear Web Enthusiasts,

I just read about a catastrophic problem with Iomega's Zip drives; I think the defect is only with the 100MB drives, but I'm not certain.

Anyone know how widespread the problem is?

My fairly new PC came installed with a zip drive, though I've never used it. Now I'm not so sure I want to. And I only have a CD-ROM drive installed, so now I need to decide how to archive my ever growing files. Any suggestions???

I first read about the Iomega suit here...

That's old... notice the article says that Iomega knew about the problem in 1999?

I've been lucky and have only had on ZIP disk fall victim to the 'Click of Death'. It was a 100MB internal ZIP drive in a computer in a computer lab at a community college (so it was bound to happen).

I own a 250MB USB ZIP drive (over a year), and have had no problems with it (yet). I don't store files on them though, I only use ZIP disks for transfering files between computers when I can't use a network. For large data storage, I use my 30GB hard drive, or the CD burner in my brother's machine.

If there is no answer on Google, then there is no question.

Iomega has known about the click of death well before 1999. I had it occur in a machine bought back in 1997. It was a known issue then. That was about the same time that I learned never to do a backup to just one place (in this case a zip disk).

So do I want to get in on this class action lawsuit. Well the main prize is a rebate on any Iomega drive that you buy. I think that I will pass on that one.

Thanks guys, for the feedback!

And the suggestion of 2 backup sources is sound advice that I had not considered--though I certainly will now.
